OSHAWA —

The Oshawa trio of Lucy DiSanto, Ana Hicks, and Natasha Noble recently added entrepreneurs to to-do lists with the creation of www.mycityartisans.com, a website dedicated to promoting and selling anything handmade — from artwork, to diaper bags and lollipops.
“It’s like their own little store,” said Ms. DiSanto, standing behind a kitchen island with her two friends turned business partners, Ms. Hicks and Ms. Noble.
“They set their own prices, we don’t do any of that,” Ms. Hicks added, while her little boy sat and snacked beside her.
The three friends came up with the website idea to fulfill their need to work, be creative and retain their active lifestyle with their sets of kids.
“We’ve been friends for a long time, our kids all go to school together,” Ms. Noble said.

Every time the women would get together they’d talk about their different ideas, always keeping in mind that they didn’t want to do something which would interfere with their active participation in their children’s lives.
“We were looking for something we were passionate about,” Ms. Hicks said.
For the women, the website met both those requirements, while also filling a need for many artists.
“It takes away one job for them and it makes a community for artists,” Ms. Noble said.
My City Artisans provides those of all levels with their own page on the site and template design elements, which they can personalize as little or as much as they like, link to their own site if they have one and display and sell their creations.

“It’s good for all levels,” Ms. Noble said. “As long as they have photos, they can do this very quickly.”
The site also has a Facebook page used to promote upcoming events for vendors, such as shows they’re participating in or classes they’re holding, and the girls plug the site wherever they go, including art shows in the U.S.

Since taking www.mycityartisans.com live in March, the site has acquired many members so far.
When the women started out, none had a background in website development and design so they contracted out the service and got advice from the Business Advisory Committee.

The website has a graphic designer and technical support. “We didn’t just decide to throw this together,” Ms. DiSanto said.
“Some of the shows are more than that,” Ms. Hicks said.

The home page sports a featured artist profile each month.
“So it’s not just a store, it’s a community of artists,” Ms. Hicks said.

Ms. Hicks even uses it to sell some of her own items, which allows her to stay in tune with how the site is working.
While some vendors are very active with their sales, the group doesn’t monitor them, just site visits — something that’s increasing all the time.
“I think it’s changed how we buy now,” Ms. DiSanto said, adding now if she needs a present, she goes to the site to

find something handmade and unique.
And their ideas don’t just stop with the website — they have all sorts of ideas for the future such as holding their own art shows and tours.
“There’s a lot of events in Toronto, it would be nice to bring some of them out here,” Ms. Noble added.
The business has really opened their eyes to how many artists are in Durham, and the more people they talk to, the more local artists they meet.
